The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein
Enzo knows he is different from other dogs: a philosopher with a nearly human soul (and an obsession with opposable thumbs), he has educated himself by watching television extensively, and by listening very closely to the words of his master, Denny Swift, an up-and-coming race car driver.
Through Denny, Enzo has gained tremendous insight into the human condition, and he sees that life, like racing, isn't simply about going fast. Using the techniques needed on the race track, one can successfully navigate all of life's ordeals.
On the eve of his death, Enzo takes stock of his life, recalling all that he and his family have been through. Having learned what it takes to be a compassionate and successful person, the wise canine can barely wait until his next lifetime, when he is sure he will return as a man.
A heart-wrenching but deeply funny and ultimately uplifting story of family, love, loyalty, and hope, The Art of Racing in the Rain is a beautifully crafted and captivating look at the wonders and absurdities of human life . . . as only a dog could tell it.

Q&A
What’s in those movie theater snacks?
Have you noticed that no one reviews movie theatre snacks? Maybe that's because their nutritional value—or lack thereof—is scarier than any horror film! Let’s start with the popcorn…
Popcorn
First of all, the word “large” when it comes to the biggest movie theater popcorn container is misleading. It should actually be called ginormous!
Popcorn is considered a whole grain, so it contains many beneficial nutrients, like B Vitamins and fiber. It's one of the healthiest snacks available at the movie theater — but not if it's drowning in butter or caramel. Three cups of popcorn is counted as one Food Guide Pyramid serving. But the “large” popcorn you're getting in your value combo is a whopping 170 oz (at least 21 cups) of popcorn. That's 1500 calories — within 2 hours! It is still gigantic even if you split it with your movie buddy.
Soda If you don't mind gulping down more empty calories, that large soda from your value combo gives you 80 grams of sugar (equivalent to 16 tsp).
Candy While most food manufactures are rolling out 100-calorie portions, the movie pack or concession-sized candy is getting bigger! A concession-sized candy package is loaded with about 440 calories per box! To put that in perspective, for 440 calories, you could have easily eaten a whole meal - like a signature Subway Club 6-inch sandwich (320 calories) plus a large banana (120 calories). Skip the Value Combo You don't gain more value by adding inches to your waistline. Eat a healthy meal before you go and take along a bottle of water. And if you're really daring ... perhaps you could sneak in some carrot/celery sticks, string cheese, and/or raw almonds).
My biggest downfall? Twizzler’s cherry twist licorice! Oh my gosh … when I was a kid we would go to the movies and take a tiny bite off each end of a piece of red licorice and use it as a straw in our Dr. Pepper soda. It would get good and soggy, and tasted amazing!
Four twists make up one serving. There are 160 calories in each serving: 9 from fat; 144 from carbs; and 4 from protein. Each serving has 19 grams of sugar. Ouch!
To burn the calories in one serving you could do any of the following:*
44 mins of walking
18 mins of jogging
13 mins of swimming
24 mins of cycling
*The calorie burning information is based on a 35-year old female that is 5.75 inches tall and weighs 144 pounds (I don’t want to know what it takes for an almost 51 year old female)! And just to rub salt in the wound … did you know that licorice comes in cinnamon, green apple, raspberry, strawberry, and watermelon flavors? Oh yes, my friend. I have discovered an evil little place on the internet (Mountain Man Nut & Fruit Co.) that has a tempting little package called ‘Deep in the Red.” It contains Short Strawberry Twists, Cherry Bites, Cherry Ju-Ju Coins, and Swedish Fish. Just shoot me now!
