Cathlene DeCraene
This Month’s Featured Artist
I’ve been drawn to pottery for as long as I can remember. Pottery on a shelf in a home, the background of a movie, a store or in a booth at an art fair- the location didn’t matter. If I saw it, I wanted to touch it, feel the weight of it, turn it upside down and examine it. I bought my first piece of pottery at 12. It was an oil lamp; I still have it on a shelf in my studio. But aside from the occasional elementary school foray into clay sculpture of the palm-sized variety, I didn’t have the opportunity to work with clay until college. And then I approached it with great trepidation: I had loved it for so long, wistfully yearning from a distance, that I was hesitant to begin.
And then – my first experience at the potter’s wheel. A life changing, seminal moment. A door opening, a new beginning, a life’s work discovered. Not just a passion, but an obsession that led to earning a B.F.A. in Ceramics.
I've been working in clay for twelve years. I'm still fascinated by it; still enthralled by the process; still exult in the sensation of my hands sliding over its soft, wet and infinitely malleable surface.

Artist’s Statement
My current body of work reflects a fascination with the natural anthropomorphism associated with pottery vessels. We describe vessels in terms of their body parts: foot, neck, belly, shoulder. I seek to subtly reference those exterior elements while also drawing a connection, perhaps at a subconscious level, to the softer, visceral, internal structures found in our bodies and in nature. I’m concerned with using texture and color to emphasize line and form. My work is wheel thrown and altered, sometimes pushed to near collapse and incorporates a personal, if obscure, symbolism that reflects issues of growth, restriction and contraction.
Available for Adoption This month we are featuring Rico.He is available for adoption through CEAS – the Coalition to End Animal Suffering. This adorable little Chihuahua weighs about 5 lbs. He is a very shy little boy, but warms up quickly once he knows he can trust you. He needs to go to a quieter home with no small children because he is so timid.
Rico is the ultimate lap dog. It is guessed that he is about 3 years old and gets along great with all size dogs and cats. He will make a wonderful companion. He is new to the rescue so we are still finding out new things about him every day. If you are interested in meeting Rico, please contact Julie at dogcrazy623@ comcast.net or at 847-497-3061.

The Artist’s Way: A Spiritual Path to Higher Creativity By Julia Cameron
Recently I was gifted this book by one of my friends, Linda. She is the creative genius behind the mosaic art of In One Peace that we carry at HolEssence. At the time of writing this review I am in week 8 of the 12 week program. I am so enjoying this book that I couldn’t wait until I finished to share it with you.
When Linda first gifted this book to me I placed it on the table next to my reading chair. I was in the middle of another book and didn’t want to interrupt the flow.
However, it kept watching me … and then finally attacked when I sat down.
In my ‘real’ life I am extremely organized and tidy. In my ‘creative’ life I am not. So to look at a program on how to systematically unlock one’s creative mind did not readily appeal to me. Ha! I was wrong. This book is not about doing creativity. It is about living creatively. And the author puts you to work immediately to achieve results. I also discovered that my creative life and my real life aren’t in two separate compartments – they’re the same thing. Who knew?!
This book is for any person who wrestles with creativity and wants to understand it better. Two of the best things I’ve gotten from this book so far are “artist’s dates” and “morning pages.” Read it for yourself and find out why …
